a perfect day con Katerin.

Saturday we had the most lovely time together. My time is running short here in Antigua, so I decided it'd be nice to take one last trip. So Saturday morning around 8:30am Katerin and her family, Leonel, my friend Javier & his daughter, and I loaded into a minibus and headed for Esquintla. Here we visited a place called "Aqua Park" where there is a beautiful natural river through the center of the park and 15 different pools with various themes and depths and types of water slides - it was a blast!
We brought with us a hecka bunch of food and around lunch time had a grand churrasco (cook-out) with 4 different types of meat, onions, this tomato sauce stuff, potatoes, black beans, guacamole, tortillas and tortilla chips, and beverage - it was Delicious!! Everyone helped with the preparation...
Here's the girls helping Leonel with the chicken...
kidlings working on the guacamole...
Javier grilling the tomatoes...
me and Gabby buttering potatoes...
boys grilling the meat...
Katerin's mom with the onions... It was a huge meal, but SO good - and everyone's little bellies were quite content afterward :)
So then we packed up and headed to the beach!! The kids had never visited la playa, so we drove to Puerto San Jose && spent a few hours in the waves, this was actually my favorite part of the trip... It melted me heart to spend time close with Katerin and to see her so free, so incredibly different from the day I first met her and she was still suffering from her epileptic attacks...
Whoa, what a difference! Praise God.
This is the whole family - except dad, because he had to work :(
Needless to say, we ALL got real wet, and real sandy!!!
Little Gabby has the hugest crush on Leonel, the whole day they were hand-in-hand or she was asking me where he was! haha
As we left the beach around 6pm, we pit-stopped to buy some coconut and mango on the side of the road, then headed back to Antigua. It was such a lovely day, and everyone slept really good that night! What a blessing this trip was to me, so lucky to have had such an opportunity.

Now I'm looking at my last couple weeks here...
2 weeks from tomorrow I'll be on a plane home,
feelings of sadness have already begun to set in,
but I'm going to make the best of the time I have left and,
as my sweet mother emailed me this morning,
I'm going to remember that "GUA is only a days flight away!" :) I love her.
It will be good to hug my family and friends when I make it back to the States...
it has been such an incredible year in Guatemala,
looking forward to the next season of life too!
...But not for another 14 days ;-P

tchau for now!

a few from mom & dad's visit

Thought it was finally time to post a brief picture summary of my time with mom and dad...
this = a bus in Guatemala City.
We had breakfast at El Tenedor (a nice restaurant up on a hill that overlooks Antigua) with Marta Thursday morning. And this is my new dress that my best friend sent me as a surprise!!
(I <3 summer dresses:)
Then I took mom and dad to Centro Scheel for a tour and they got to help serve lunch, which was super cool because they got to see the face of every single child that attends the school where I work, so this was special to me!
In the afternoon we visited Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm with Elsa & her daughter where I got to practice a lot of translating && we learned all about macadamia nut production.
And on Friday mom and dad went to work with me at the San Felipe location of Nuestros Ahijados where they helped serve the the woman of the Mother's Club vegetable donations.
Then we headed to Katerin's to celebrate her 12th birthday!
Here is Katerin and her beautiful family...
and her giant piƱata!
And we had a triple chocolate cake for her, with like 18 candles
(because she wanted me to put them all on there)
and i smashed her face in the cake! haha - it's a tradition here! :-P
Then she modeled some new school clothing && wore the biggest smile the rest of the afternoon! It was really sweet to celebrate her birthday with her, and really wonderful that mom and dad could be there too! Along with items to celebrate her birthday we brought the news that as of that morning (Friday) it had been made official that Katerin is now our "Ahijada" god-daughter. So everyone was just really excited and it was a really nice day.
Sunday we watched the processional of St. Bartelow from the roof-top terrace of Cafe Sky.
Then Monday we went to Lake Atitlan & Panajachel for a night away...
We stayed in Jaibalito at a place called "Casa del Mundo" and it was just absolutely gorgeous! This was our room, decorated with typical Mayan colors and with our private balcony that overlooked the lake and 2 volcanoes. We really enjoyed our stay here, it was relaxing and a great way to finish up our time together before they headed back to the U.S.
Wednesday morning I brought mom and dad to the airport and they cried... (typical) lol But now they know a little bit better why I'm so attached to Guatemala and it was really cool to have the chance to show them what my life here is all about. I'm glad they got to come.

[EDIT] This morning a helicopter crashed into the house next door/in front of mine. It was a very dramatic morning and the police are still on the rooftop taking care of the situation. My road is blocked off and there's news people everywhere... Thank the Lord (as far as I know) nobody died, there were 4 people involved and only one was seriously injured...

the alfombra process.

So my intention was to post lots like every day this week, then i had all sorts of trouble getting pics to upload and now it's Saturday... utz! But anyway, still have lots to post from the past 3 weeks or so, so hopefully i'll have better luck these next few days.

We're wrapping up Semana Santa (or Holy Week) here now in Antigua - oh, ps. HAPPY EASTER! :) - the processions are coming to a close, the last one leaving at some point today, and everything is slowly going to return back to normal around here but... I want to share some of Semana Santa with you.

First background (and I'm no scholar but I'll do my best) - the majority of people here in Antigua are Catholic. A long time ago when the spanish came over to Guatemala they brought their catholic background and traditions and have kind of implemented them on the people of Guatemala, and now today it is a huge part of the culture. As lent begins, the processions and velacions begin. Every Friday in a church around/outside of Antigua they have a representation scene of a scripture from the Bible - every week they're different, and I actually don't really know how the scripture is chosen - but these representations are in the church all day Friday with street vendors outside the church and it kind of looks like a big carnival (minus the rides) but everyone in town goes to see this scene, they're beautiful and I will post pictures of some soon too. Then on Sunday a procession leaves from this church carrying a massive float-like thing with Jesus and Mary... and makes way through the streets of Antigua with music and incense - and as it gets closer and closer to Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter) the bigger and bigger and longer and longer these processions get.

What I want to post today is photos of what the people who are not involved in the procession create outside their home, essentially viewed as an offering to God, these are called alfombras (or carpets). I helped with one of these this past week, and whoa, it's a lot more work than I had thought!!!

First you buy the products:
-saw dust
-dyes (color)
-molds
-wood to line the edges
-flowers, etc.
In total my friend spent about 2000Q ($263) to purchase the supplies, but then it costs time...
We began on Tuesday night to sift the saw dust
Once the useful sawdust was separated,
we spent hours dying it to create all sorts of
different colors, and to do this, you separate a
bit of sawdust and mix in salt and a color powder,
then you grind it together and stir it around a ton
(and add water) until every bit of it is bright with color...
I helped with fuscia, green, and yellow, Leonel was up
almost an entire night finishing the rest.
The procession was scheduled to pass Thursday afternoon,
so Leonel started with the alfombra at about 2am that day.
And some friends showed up around 6...I passed by at
about 8 on my way to class, and this is where they were at:
I got there around 11 to help finish things up, they had already
completed the sawdust design, it was time to add flowers!
We finished I think around 12(?) or 1... then we waited...
for about 3 hours for the procession to
come and trample over this investment (haha)
This was the procession of a church near my house called
La Iglesia San Francisco. I think there was in total
80 men carrying, it was huge!
We watched from the rooftop as they passed over our alfombra..
Then along came the clean up men who scooped it all up,
and shoveled all our hard work into a garbage collector.

Ha! It's a fascinating concept really, and I was very
blessed to take part in this activity and learn how it's done.
My favorite part of Semana Santa was viewing the alfombras
that people made; such creativity and dedication.
Here's some pics of other alfombras that I really liked:
Alfombra making is a pretty big deal, and I
really like it because I see that it kind of brings
the community together. At times neighbors
combine their efforts to create something special, and
families are working together - it's really quite lovely to see!
